WHAT IS VALCIVIR?
Valcivir is similar to Valtrex and Generic Valacyclovir. It is an antiviral used to treat or suppress herpes zoster infections and genital herpes. Valcivir can be used in conjunction with safe sex practices to reduce the spread to others. It does not cure the disease but lessens the symptoms. The antiviral slows the spread and growth so that the body is able to fight infection.
Infections that are caused by herpes viruses such as cold sores, shingles and chicken pox can also be treated by Valcivir. As soon as the symptoms occur, treatment with Valcivir should be started. Symptoms include tingling, burning and blisters.
BEFORE USING VALCIVIR
There may be some medical conditions and medicines that will affect Valcivir. It is important that patients inform the doctor and pharmacist regarding his or her medical history. Valcivir is not recommended for those with an abnormal immune system and caution must be taken with those who suffer from medical conditions, pregnancy, allergies, HIV/AIDS, kidney disease, kidney transplant, bone marrow transplant or are breast-feeding.
PRECAUTIONS
If a woman is pregnant, the herpes virus can be passed to the child during child birth. Genital herpes should be prevented during pregnancy to prevent genital lesion when the baby is born. Valcivir also passes through breast milk and may harm the nursing infant. Consultation with a doctor whilst taking Valcivir when pregnant or breast feeding is necessary to determine the risks.
To prevent the spread of genital herpes, it is important to combine Valcivir and latex condoms during sexual intercourse. Furthermore, do not take the drug if you are allergic to valacylovir or acyclovir.
INSTRUCTIONS
Valcivir comes in a tablet form. For shingles, it is taken three times a day, every 8 hours for 7 days. To treat genital herpes it is taken twice a day for five days. It is important to follow the instructions exactly as prescribed.
When the symptoms appear, take the medication immediately as it may not be effective if you start taking it a few days after. Each dose should be taken with a full glass of water, with or without food. During this period, keep the lesions clean and dry as well as wear loose clothing to prevent irritation.
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. However if it’s nearly time for your scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and wait for the next regular one. Valcivir must be stored out of reach from children in a air tight container at room temperature.
